Cystatin C, Serum with Reflex to Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) (Change effective as of 10/21/24: Refer to 3018316 in the October Hotline.)
Also known as: CYSTAT C
Use
This test measures serum cystatin C and reflexes to calculate estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the CKD‑EPI creatinine‑cystatin 2021 equation, which is particularly useful when serum creatinine may be misleading (for example, in elderly, severely obese, or malnourished patients). Accurate estimation requires stable filtration markers; non‑GFR determinants such as cellular generation, diet, tubular secretion/reabsorption, and extra‑renal elimination may affect eGFR accuracy. eGFR is normalized to a body surface area of 1.73 m². GFR categories are provided to interpret CKD stages (G1–G5).
