Cystatin C with Glomerular Filtration Rate, Estimated (eGFR)
Also known as: CysX, CysC
Use
Cystatin C is a non-glycosylated, low molecular weight cysteine proteinase inhibitor produced by all nucleated cells and found in serum. Its concentration is inversely correlated with GFR and is less influenced by factors such as body mass, diet, inflammatory states, or drugs, making it a potentially more reliable marker of renal function, especially in individuals with abnormal muscle mass or rapid changes in kidney function. The CKD‑EPI cystatin C equation is used to estimate GFR based on age and gender. eGFR based on cystatin C may be advantageous in specific populations, such as the elderly, malnourished, or hospitalized patients.
