Fluoroquinolone-Resistant Organism, Culture
Also known as: MC FRO
Use
The Fluoroquinolone-Resistant Organism, Culture test is a screening culture designed to detect organisms resistant to fluoroquinolones. It is primarily considered before conducting trans-rectal prostate biopsy to ensure that fluoroquinolone-resistant organisms are absent, thus preventing any complications. This screening is crucial for safely guiding further medical procedures in patients who may harbor resistant organisms, although it is not intended for screening donor material.
Special Instructions
Specimen source is required when ordering this test. Collection involves transporting a rectal swab in Eswab transport media. The Eswab is available through ARUP Supply and should be transported refrigerated. It is crucial to follow the storage and transport instructions accurately to ensure the validity of the test results.
Limitations
The culture may not detect all possible fluoroquinolone-resistant organisms, as it relies on culture growth and identification, which might miss slow-growing or non-culturable strains. Results depend on proper specimen collection and transport conditions, and results can take 1-4 days depending on the growth rate of the organisms. Negative results are reported if no growth is detected by the 4th day.
