Fungal (Mold/Yeast) Identification
Also known as: MC FUNGID
Use
This test is used to identify pathogenic fungi/yeast from an isolate. It is important for diagnosing fungal infections, which can be critical in immunocompromised patients or those with systemic infections. Accurate identification helps in selecting appropriate antifungal therapies and managing patient care effectively. The test provides differentiation between Candida albicans and Candida dubliniensis based on specimen source and when susceptibility testing is requested, enhancing the understanding of specific fungal infections.
Special Instructions
An additional processing fee will be billed for organisms that are not in pure culture. Organisms submitted for identification are kept for 7 days. If the organism fails to grow, the client will be notified in the final report. Requests to rule out Penicillium marneffei may be sent to another referral lab.
Limitations
The test requires actively growing mold or yeast in pure culture; mixed cultures or nonviable organisms are unacceptable. The methodology may include biochemical, mass spectrometry, or sequencing, which have intrinsic limitations in sensitivity and specificity, and the choice of method depends on the specimen/source. False negatives can occur if the specimen does not contain viable organisms. Stability of samples is limited to 4 weeks at ambient or refrigerated conditions and is unacceptable if frozen.
