Hemoglobin, Urine
Also known as: HGBU
Use
This test is used to distinguish between hematuria and hemoglobinuria. The presence of hemoglobinuria in the absence of hematuria may indicate severe intravascular hemolysis. It plays a role in assessing urinary hemoglobin which can be suggestive of conditions causing intravascular hemolysis.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
The test is not sensitive to very low concentrations of hemoglobin in the urine. Ambient conditions are unacceptable for samples, and samples must be handled as per storage instructions to maintain integrity. It is crucial to differentiate hemoglobin from other possible urinary components to avoid misinterpretation.
