Hemosiderin, Urine
Also known as: UHEMSID
Use
The Hemosiderin, Urine test is used to detect hemosiderinuria, which occurs as a result of excess hemolysis. This can be important for diagnosing hemolytic anemias where there is an abnormal breakdown of red blood cells within the body, leading to the presence of hemosiderin in urine.
Special Instructions
First-morning urine collection is preferred to ensure sample consistency, as hemosiderin levels may fluctuate throughout the day. It is important to ensure that specimens are collected in a preservative-free container to avoid interference with test results.
Limitations
The test is qualitative and yields results that are either 'Absent' or 'Present', meaning it does not quantify the amount of hemosiderin in the urine. Positive results indicate the presence of hemosiderin but do not measure the severity or extent of hemolysis.
