Insecticide Exposure Panel
Also known as: CHE-SCRN
Use
The Insecticide Exposure Panel is designed to evaluate both acute and chronic exposure to organophosphate pesticides. It is utilized for assessing cholinesterase activity levels in the blood, which can be inhibited by exposure to these pesticides. The test measures plasma and red blood cell cholinesterase levels along with their ratio to hemoglobin, providing valuable insights into potential pesticide poisoning.
Special Instructions
Specimens should be collected using lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA) tubes. It is crucial not to freeze, spin down, or separate the samples. The whole blood specimens must be transported refrigerated, ensuring they do not come into direct contact with cool packs during shipping. Ensure specimens are not hemolyzed or frozen, and avoid using green (sodium or lithium heparin) tubes for collection.
Limitations
The test is limited to measuring cholinesterase activity levels, which can vary due to factors like genetics, certain medical conditions, and medications. These factors can influence baseline levels, potentially affecting interpretation. The Ellman method results are standardized to the acetylthiocholine assay at 25°C, which may cause slight deviations based on testing conditions. Interpretation requires consideration of clinical history and potential confounding variables.
