Isohemagglutinin Titer, IgM
Also known as: IRL ISO M
Use
The Isohemagglutinin Titer, IgM test aids in determining the relative amount of anti-A or anti-B present in a patient's plasma. Higher titers may be used to evaluate an individual's ability to mount an immune response against the cognate antigens. This test is particularly significant in scenarios requiring evaluation of antibody presence that could affect transfusion compatibility and immunological response assessments.
Special Instructions
This test only measures IgM isohemagglutinin titers based on ABO screening results. If both IgG and IgM titers are needed, the Isohemagglutinin Titer, IgG & IgM (2000280) should be ordered. Specimens are first screened for antibodies. If antibodies are detected, further antibody identification is performed, and titers are conducted as indicated by the detected isohemagglutinins. Additional charges apply for antibody identification and titer testing.
Limitations
The test cannot determine the presence of isohemagglutinins in all individuals, as it is contingent on an accurate ABO blood type determination. Titers are not performed on blood type AB, as these individuals typically do not have anti-A or anti-B antibodies. The test's performance might be impacted by conditions such as bone marrow transplants, non-group specific blood transfusions, or subgroup variation, leading to mixed field agglutination results.
