Ova and Parasite Exam, Body Fluid or Urine
Also known as: OP BF/U
Use
This test is used to detect extraintestinal parasites in body fluids such as CSF and urine. It is essential for diagnosing infections caused by parasites like Schistosoma species, which are known to cause Schistosomiasis. The test aids in the identification of ova and parasites, aiding clinicians in the diagnosis and management of parasitic infections, particularly when intestinal ova and parasites are suspected to be present in other body fluids.
Special Instructions
If Schistosoma haematobium is suspected, the urine specimen should be collected at midday or involve a 24-hour collection as peak egg excretion takes place between noon and 3 p.m. It is important to note that a specimen source is required for accurate testing. Consider alternative tests such as Acanthamoeba and Naegleria Culture (0060245) or Amoeba Calcofluor Stain (0060250) for ruling out Naegleria and other free living amoeba.
Limitations
This test is limited to qualitative concentration and microscopy techniques, which might not detect very low levels of parasites. The Trichrome stain is not performed; results are based on the examination of a wet mount. The stability of body fluid and urine specimens is limited to 72 hours at room temperature or when refrigerated; freezing samples is unacceptable as it compromises sample integrity.
