Parvovirus B19 Antibodies, IgG and IgM
Also known as: PARVO
Use
This test aids in the diagnosis of parvovirus infection by detecting the presence of Parvovirus B19 antibodies, IgG, and IgM. The presence of IgG antibodies may indicate current or past infection, while IgM antibodies suggest a more recent or active infection. Monitoring both IgG and IgM antibodies can help distinguish between acute and convalescent stages of infection, especially when supported by appropriately timed specimens as part of a serial testing strategy.
Special Instructions
For accurate results, specimens should be marked as 'acute' or 'convalescent.' Parallel testing is preferred, and it is recommended to perform repeated testing in 7-21 days if results are equivocal. Convalescent specimens should be received within 30 days of the acute specimen.
Limitations
The test may yield equivocal results, requiring repeat testing in 7-21 days. Low levels of IgM antibodies can persist for over 12 months post-infection, potentially affecting the interpretation of current infection. Testing immediately after exposure is of limited value unless followed by convalescent specimen collection. The assay requires that specimens are appropriately timed and handled to avoid bacterial contamination, hemolysis, lipemia, or other unacceptable conditions.
