Proinsulin, Intact
Also known as: PROINS
Use
This test aids in the detection of insulinoma but should not be used to diagnose diabetes mellitus. Insulinomas are rare pancreatic tumors that secrete insulin, leading to hypoglycemia. The test measures the level of intact proinsulin, which can be elevated in insulinoma, providing a diagnostic tool for clinicians to differentiate between various conditions that cause hypoglycemia.
Special Instructions
Patient must fast for 10-12 hours prior to collection. Separate the sample from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection and transfer it to an appropriate transport tube before freezing immediately. Ensure that separate specimens are submitted if multiple tests are ordered.
Limitations
The test is not intended for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Grossly hemolyzed specimens are unacceptable, and the specimen must be processed and frozen immediately to ensure sample integrity. Improper handling and delay in processing may affect test accuracy. Results should be interpreted in the context of clinical findings and other laboratory findings.
