Protein C and S Panel, Functional
Also known as: C/S PANEL
Use
The Protein C and S Panel, Functional test is used to detect deficiencies in protein C and protein S, which are important for the regulation of blood coagulation and the prevention of thrombosis. Protein C and S deficiencies can lead to an increased risk of thrombotic events and are part of the hereditary thrombophilia evaluation. It is recommended not to order this test if the patient has been on warfarin therapy in the previous 2-4 weeks, as it may interfere with the results.
Special Instructions
Preferred test for detecting protein S deficiency is Protein S Free, Antigen (0098894). Specimens must be handled according to hemostasis/thrombosis specimen handling guidelines, and it is crucial that they are separated and transported frozen if multiple tests are ordered. Patients should be off warfarin for accurate measurement of protein C and S.
Limitations
This test should not be ordered if the patient is under warfarin therapy as it can artificially affect protein C and S levels. Patients may show decreased values if on warfarin, and artificially increased values can occur due to heparin therapy or the presence of direct thrombin inhibitors or factor Xa inhibitors.
