Synaptophysin by Immunohistochemistry
Also known as: SYNAPT IHC
Use
This immunohistochemical stain assesses synaptophysin expression—a marker for neuroendocrine and neuronal differentiation—on formalin-fixed, paraffin‑embedded tissue or cell block preparations. It serves as a technical, stain‑and‑return service used to aid identification and classification of neuronal or neuroendocrine tumors in the histopathologic evaluation context.
Special Instructions
Order via electronic request when capable; otherwise use ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Form #32978 with an ARUP client number. Use ARUP’s Immunohistochemistry Stain Offerings brochure for ordering guidance. This test is New York state approved. It is performed as a technical (stain and return) service only.
Limitations
Specimens must be representative tissue or cells; depleted or non‑representative specimens are unacceptable. Slides must be positively charged, 3‑5 microns thick; do not oven bake precut slides. The test provides the stain only; no diagnostic interpretation is included—pathologist interpretation must be ordered separately. Frozen or improperly fixed specimens are unacceptable. Protect paraffin blocks or slides from excessive heat.
