Vitamin B3 (Niacin and Metabolites), Serum/Plasma
Also known as: VITA B3
Use
This test is used for therapeutic drug monitoring and toxicological assessment of Niacin (Vitamin B3) supplementation. The test helps in measuring the serum levels of Niacin and its metabolites to manage and monitor treatment. Due to large variability in nicotinic acid metabolism and different preparations, serum concentrations vary significantly. It's crucial for determining the appropriate dosage and assessing toxicity potential.
Special Instructions
Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. This test is performed by a non-ARUP laboratory and may not be available for routine endogenous Vitamin B3 determination.
Limitations
This test should not be used for assessing basal or endogenous Vitamin B3 levels as the reference comment does not reflect normal serum concentrations. Interpretation should consider variability in metabolism and form of nicotinic acid being used.
