Alphafetoprotein Analysis - Amniotic Fluid
Use
This test provides analysis of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in amniotic fluid for the detection of open neural tube defects and ventral wall defects. It is important to interpret AFP results in the context of ultrasonography, as a positive result does not confirm an anomaly. The provider must ensure that gestational information is included to enhance accuracy. Testing is indicated for prenatal ultrasound findings suggestive of congenital anomalies or open neural tube defects, positive first trimester screening, high reproductive risk, or a family history of related conditions.
Special Instructions
For optimal results, it is crucial to follow proper sample collection and handling procedures. Ensure that the patient is adequately informed about the relevance of gestational age and any potential implications of the test results. Samples collected for this analysis should be shipped to the laboratory promptly to maintain integrity.
Limitations
AFP levels may vary based on maternal factors such as gestational age, and may not conclusively indicate the presence of anomalies without further investigation. The test results should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical findings and ultrasound imaging. Misinterpretation may occur if the raw numerical values are solely relied on without appropriate context. There could also be instances of false positives or negatives due to varying biological factors.
