Calcitonin (Thyrocalcitonin) (Serial Monitor)
Use
The Calcitonin (Thyrocalcitonin) (Serial Monitor) test is used for the long-term monitoring of calcitonin levels in patients. Calcitonin is a hormone secreted by the thyroid gland, and its levels are used to monitor and manage medullary thyroid carcinoma and other conditions that may affect calcitonin secretion. Serial monitoring can assist in the early detection of changes in calcitonin concentration, which may indicate recurrence or progression of disease.
Special Instructions
State on the request form if calcium infusion or pentagastrin injection tests are part of the patient preparation. The account must submit the patient's Social Security number to monitor. Values obtained with different assay methods should not be used interchangeably in serial testing. It is recommended that only one assay method be used consistently to monitor each patient's course of therapy.
Limitations
Values obtained with different assay methodologies should not be used interchangeably in serial testing. Assay results should not be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of malignant disease.
