Chromosome Analysis, Prenatal/Perinatal Cordocentesis and Fetal Hemoglobin
Also known as: Cord blood, Fetal blood, Karyotyping, Percutaneous Umbilical Cord Sampling (PUBS)
Use
Rapid analysis of fetal chromosomes, used most frequently following the determination of fetal amniocyte mosaicism
Special Instructions
Include medical indication for procedure and specify patient's name and age on the request form. Specimen collection should be scheduled promptly, and any deviations from standard procedures may influence test results.
Limitations
Results are based on standard G-banded karyotyping and may not detect subtle rearrangements below cytogenetic resolution or anomalies caused by non-chromosomal etiologies. Cytogenetic analysis is limited to the cells collected; inadequate specimen quality can affect the accuracy of results.
