Complement C1 Esterase Inhibitor, Functional
Also known as: C1 Esterase Inhibitor, C1 Inactivator, C1 Inhibitor, Esterase Inhibitor, Hereditary Angioneurotic Edema Test
Use
Esterase inhibitor is decreased in hereditary angioneurotic edema. Functional level will be decreased when concentration of inhibitor is decreased or inhibitor is nonfunctional.
Special Instructions
For accurate results, it is important to separate serum or plasma from cells and transfer it to a plastic transport tube before freezing. When multiple tests are requested on frozen samples, separate frozen specimens should be submitted for each test to avoid delays in turnaround time.
Limitations
The test may not accurately differentiate between hereditary and acquired deficiency states. Additionally, other factors such as improper sample handling may affect the reliability of test results. Thawed or nonfrozen samples, as well as plasma other than EDTA, are causes for rejection, which may necessitate resubmission of samples.
