Cortisol, Five Specimens
Use
The cortisol test, utilizing five specimens, is employed to evaluate adrenal function and conditions associated with excess or deficient levels of cortisol. It is valuable in diagnosing disorders like Cushing's syndrome or Addison's disease by measuring the hormone levels at different times of the day to understand the circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion.
Special Instructions
Patients scheduled for this test should discontinue biotin supplements, including vitamin B7, at least 72 hours before sample collection as biotin can interfere with the assay. Collect sequential samples as directed.
Limitations
This test may show interference if the patient has consumed biotin supplements. The test is sensitive to sample handling and timing, emphasizing the importance of proper timing and sample collection procedures. Additionally, variations may occur if the usual testing schedule is disrupted, requiring additional confirmatory tests.
