Cortisol, Serum
Also known as: CORTISOL
Use
The Cortisol, Serum test is used for the differential diagnosis of Cushing syndrome and to screen and diagnose primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency. It provides valuable diagnostic information on the adrenal gland's function and is critical for evaluating patients with suspected disorders affecting cortisol metabolism.
Special Instructions
Specimen should be allowed to clot completely at room temperature, then separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. The serum should be transferred to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube with a minimum volume of 0.6 mL for transportation.
Limitations
The test cannot be performed on saliva specimens. Results can be affected by repeated freeze/thaw cycles of the sample. It is important to adhere to proper sample collection and handling procedures to ensure accuracy of results. Interferences from certain medications may occur, which should be considered when interpreting results.
