Diabetes Risk–Asymptomatic Adults
Also known as: Diabetes Risk Assessment, Prediabetes Screen
Use
Screen for prediabetes and diabetes in asymptomatic adults
Special Instructions
For plasma glucose, it is critical to spin the samples soon after collection. SST tubes should clot for about 30 minutes and be centrifuged within 45 minutes. Without prompt centrifugation, glucose levels can decrease factitiously. It is important to label the specimen as plasma and ensure it is mixed well. For A1c, avoid clots and hematocrit disorders to prevent erroneous results.
Limitations
Hemoglobin A1c readings can be affected by any condition that shortens erythrocyte lifespan, such as hemolytic anemia. Glycated hemoglobin F is not detected. Specimens high in Hb F (>10%) may lead to lower than expected Hb A1c results. For FPG, diurnal variations mean higher readings in the morning than in the afternoon, and glycolysis can falsely lower results unless promptly centrifuged and inhibited with preservatives like sodium fluoride.
