Diphtheria Antitoxoid Antibodies
Also known as: Diphtheria Antibodies, Diphtheria Toxin Antibodies
Use
Assess immunity against diphtheria by determining levels of circulating antibodies to diphtheria toxin or to measure the immune response, postvaccination, in individuals suspected of immunodeficiency disorders
Special Instructions
The test may be considered investigational by some insurance carriers, such as Medicare, and may not be reimbursed as a covered benefit. Repeated tests cannot be performed with the minimum specimen volume.
Limitations
This test is rarely used for confirming diphtheria infection itself as it cannot accurately differentiate antibody levels between 0.10 IU/mL and 0.01 IU/mL. Additionally, immunity levels detected tend to decline with age, highlighting the importance of considering patient history and possible additional factors influencing immunity.
