Gerbil Epithelium
Use
The Gerbil Epithelium test is used to detect specific IgE antibodies to gerbil epithelia. This test is significant in diagnosing allergies and hypersensitivity reactions in individuals potentially allergic to gerbil dander or epithelium. The results of the test can aid clinicians in the management of allergic conditions by identifying allergen triggers, which can subsequently guide avoidance strategies or immunotherapy treatments.
Special Instructions
The test should be ordered when there is clinical suspicion of allergy to gerbil epithelium. It's important for the provider to coordinate with the laboratory regarding the collection and transportation of specimens to ensure integrity during transit.
Limitations
The Gerbil Epithelium test may not detect all cases of hypersensitivity to gerbil epithelia due to variability in immune responses among individuals. Cross-reactivity with other allergens may also affect test results. False positives can occur; thus, results should always be interpreted in conjunction with patient history and other clinical findings. Additionally, the test is not FDA-cleared or approved, but LabCorp has determined its performance characteristics for clinical use.
