Hemoglobin (Hb), Fetal, Quantitative
Also known as: Fetal Hemoglobin, Hb F, Hemoglobin F Quantitation
Use
Evaluate hemoglobinopathies, hemolytic anemia; diagnose hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin; diagnose thalassemia; evaluate sickling hemoglobins
Special Instructions
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is performed initially. If an abnormal hemoglobin is detected, appropriate testing will be performed at an additional charge. To avoid delays in turnaround time, please submit a separate lavender-top tube for each test requiring a lavender-top.
Limitations
The test may not detect all forms of hemoglobinopathies and is primarily a quantitative assessment of fetal hemoglobin levels. It is not suitable for screening or diagnosing every possible abnormality. Conditions like erythroblastosis fetalis and anoxic states might alter the interpretation of Hb F levels. Variability in Hb F levels and its associated conditions may also pose interpretive challenges in some cases.
