Hemoglobin F with Reflex to Electrophoresis
Use
The Hemoglobin F with Reflex to Electrophoresis test is used to determine the percentage of hemoglobin F (HbF) in patients. Monitoring HbF levels is clinically significant for evaluating conditions like hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin, beta thalassemia, and various acquired conditions including pregnancy and hematological disorders. Elevated HbF can indicate underlying health issues that require further investigation through complete hemoglobin evaluation.
Special Instructions
This assay measures only the percentage of hemoglobin F. If abnormal hemoglobin peaks are detected, Capillary Electrophoresis is automatically added to assist in confirming and identifying the variant, incurring additional charges. For comprehensive hemoglobin evaluation, consider ordering additional tests such as Hemoglobin Evaluation with Reflex to Electrophoresis and/or RBC Solubility tests.
Limitations
The test only measures the percentage of hemoglobin F and is limited in diagnosing other hemoglobin variants unless abnormal peaks are detected and reflex testing is triggered. It does not substitute for a complete hemoglobin evaluation, which may require additional tests to confirm any detected abnormal hemoglobin variants.
