Mononucleosis Test, Qualitative With Reflex to Titer on Positives
Also known as: Heterophil Agglutinins, Heterophil Antibodies, Infectious Mononucleosis (IM) Antibodies
Use
Detect heterophil antibodies related to infectious mononucleosis
Special Instructions
Endpoint titer is performed at an additional charge when the preliminary qualitative test is positive. The test requires careful interpretation as false-positive results can occur, possibly leading to diagnostic confusion.
Limitations
The test has an excellent specificity but may result in false-positive findings. Rarely, patients may have positive heterophil agglutinins after a negative initial test. Additionally, 10% of true Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) mononucleosis cases may have negative heterophil agglutinins; these instances may require further EBV specific testing for confirmation.
