Epstein-Barr Virus Antibody to Viral Capsid Antigen, IgG

Use
This test is used to document past exposure to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or, in conjunction with other serologic tests, diagnose primary EBV infectious mononucleosis. The presence of IgG antibodies to the viral capsid antigen is indicative of either past infection or ongoing active infection, depending on the results of additional serological tests. The test assists clinicians in diagnosing and managing EBV-related conditions and making informed treatment decisions for patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of infectious mononucleosis.
Special Instructions
It is important to label specimens clearly as 'acute' or 'convalescent' to ensure accurate interpretation of results. Parallel testing is preferred, and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from the receipt of the acute specimens. Ensure proper specimen handling and transfer 2 mL serum to an ARUP standard transport tube.
Limitations
The EBV IgG values obtained with different manufacturers' assay methods may not be used interchangeably. The magnitude of the reported EBV IgG level cannot be correlated to an endpoint titer, meaning that quantitative results from different laboratories or assay systems may not be directly comparable. Additionally, specimen conditions such as contamination, heat inactivation, icterus, or gross hemolysis can interfere with test performance and result accuracy. Repeated freeze/thaw cycles should also be avoided to maintain specimen integrity.
