Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Respiratory) Culture
Also known as: Culture, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, PPLO Culture
Use
Isolate and identify Mycoplasma pneumoniae
Special Instructions
It is important to submit one specimen per test requested, specifying the exact source or origin such as sputum. Specific test numbers should be indicated on the request form to ensure proper processing. Due to the slow growth of M. pneumoniae, culture results may take an extended time to process.
Limitations
The culture procedure for Mycoplasma pneumoniae is characterized by a slow growth rate and is somewhat insensitive, often requiring two weeks or more for isolation and definitive identification of positive cultures. Due to these limitations, culture is infrequently used, and detection of antibodies using immunofluorescence techniques or immunoassays, although not available for routine testing, are recommended when possible.
