Parathyroid Hormone-related Peptide (PTH-rP) (Endocrine Sciences)
Also known as: Parathyroid Hormone-related Protein, PTHrp
Use
The Parathyroid Hormone-related Peptide (PTH-rP) test is crucial for assessing levels of PTH-rP in patients. Elevation of PTH-rP levels can be indicative of certain medical conditions, such as humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM), a condition often associated with cancer. Therefore, this test is used in conjunction with the patient's medical history, clinical examination, and other diagnostic findings to provide a comprehensive assessment.
Special Instructions
The results of the PTH-rP assay should be interpreted in conjunction with the patient's medical history, clinical examination, and other findings. Immediate freezing of the specimen post-collection is crucial for maintaining sample integrity and ensuring accurate results.
Limitations
The PTH-rP assay cannot be used to exclude cancer or diagnose humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM) as a standalone test. It should not be employed as a screening test for tumor patients. If test results are clinically discordant, further investigation and direct consultation with the laboratory are recommended.

Collection Instructions
Collect into chilled or prefrozen plastic lavender-top (EDTA) tube, noting the time of collection. After venipuncture, immediately invert tube several times to ensure complete mixture. Separate plasma from cells by centrifugation. Separate plasma into a plastic vial, and freeze within 15 minutes of collection. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.
Storage Instructions
Freeze.
