PrEP Use Only: Lipid Panel
Also known as: Pre-exposure prophylaxis Lipid panel
Use
This test is for PrEP use only and to evaluate hyperlipidemia as an index to coronary artery disease in individuals who are eligible for or who are receiving pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP).
Special Instructions
Patients should ideally be on a stable diet for two to three weeks prior to blood collection. Fasting is not necessary, but recommended for triglyceride evaluations in order to screen familial hypercholesterolemia or early onset heart disease. Avoid lipid panels for three months following acute myocardial infarction.
Limitations
Patients with obstructive liver disease may develop lipoprotein abnormalities. Serum lipid factors have not been demonstrated to strongly influence recurrent stenosis following coronary angioplasty. LDL cholesterol calculation is not possible if triglyceride levels are greater than 800 mg/dL. Conditions like nephrosis, renal failure, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and others can result in secondary hyperlipoproteinemia.
