Protein, Total
Use
Evaluate nutritional status; investigate edema.
Special Instructions
Total protein and albumin normally decrease by 5% to 10% upon recumbency, as in hospitalization. It is important that the specimen is separated from cells within four hours of collection to ensure accuracy of the results.
Limitations
The clinical interpretation of total protein levels is greatly enhanced by examining the individual fractions composing total protein, such as through serum protein electrophoresis, quantitative immunodiffusion, or immunofixation. These methods can help in diagnosing specific conditions when clinical separation is indicated.
