Use
This test is used to measure the level of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) in plasma.
Special Instructions
Contact Labcorp supply department for collection kit. This assay is not available for use in New York state.
Limitations
Not all patients with the syndrome have increased VIP levels. Increased VIP can also be found in healthy controls and in individuals who abuse laxatives. This test was developed and its performance characteristics were determined by Labcorp. It has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Results obtained with different assay methods or kits cannot be used interchangeably.

Collection Instructions
Trasylol kits may be ordered. Using a chilled 6-mL lavender-top (EDTA) tube from the kit, collect a whole blood specimen. Mix several times by inverting. Add 0.25 mL Trasylol to the EDTA tube, recap, and invert to mix. Centrifuge to separate plasma and transfer into brown screw-cap tubes labeled 'Trasylol Added'. Cap and freeze.
Patient Preparation
Patient must not have received radioactive substances 24 hours prior to test.
Storage Instructions
Freeze.
Causes for Rejection
Sample not collected with Trasylol; sample not submitted in tube with Trasylol label, gross hemolysis, recently administered radioisotopes, specimen not received frozen, serum, sodium citrate, or heparinized plasma specimen, lipemia.
