Escherichia coli O157, Culture
Also known as: E. coli, Escherichia coli Shiga Toxins, EIA, Stool
Use
This test performs culture for Escherichia coli O157, often following detection of Shiga toxin, to identify the causative organism in diarrheal illness and guide identification steps.
Special Instructions
Reflex testing: if Shiga toxin is detected, reflex to E. coli O157 culture is performed at an additional charge; if culture is positive, identification (and antibiotic susceptibilities if appropriate) are performed at additional charges.
Limitations
Culture does not detect non‑O157 Shiga toxin–producing E. coli; identification and susceptibilities are extra and only performed when appropriate.
