Ethylene glycol, a component of antifreeze, may be ingested accidentally or intentionally (e.g., for suicide). While relatively nontoxic itself, it is metabolized to toxic compounds such as glycolic acid and oxalic acid, leading to serious outcomes including neurological disturbances, severe metabolic acidosis, acute renal failure, and cardiopulmonary collapse.
Special Instructions
Ordering facility must contact Quest for a STAT courier. Specimen must be sent to Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute (Wood Dale, IL).
