This test is used only to determine pregnancy; it detects the presence (qualitative) of total human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the patient’s serum, indicating whether the patient is likely pregnant. It is not intended to measure levels quantitatively.

Limitations
Heterophilic antibodies may produce low false‑positive results; urinary hCG may be negative if “phantom” hCG is suspected. Pituitary secretion may be a source of low‑level hCG in postmenopausal women.
