Herpes Simplex Virus, Type 1 and 2 DNA, Qualitative, Real-Time PCR
Use
This molecular diagnostic assay provides qualitative detection of DNA from Herpes Simplex Virus types 1 and 2, aiding in diagnosis of infection (e.g., HSV encephalitis, mucocutaneous lesions). Results help clinicians differentiate HSV‑1 versus HSV‑2 infection for appropriate patient management.
Special Instructions
Refer to in‑house HSV PCR for plasma, CSF, or lesion swabs. Indicate specimen source in comments and on the specimen label and batch sheet.
Limitations
Results should be interpreted in context of clinical presentation; CSF testing especially may yield false negatives early in disease course. Rejection of certain transport media (e.g., AVANTIK) or whole blood is specified. Analytical limitations tied to specimen type and handling.
