Use
This test is used to measure the concentration of galactose-alpha-1,3-galatose (alpha-gal) specific IgE antibodies in the blood. It can aid in diagnosing alpha-gal syndrome, which is an allergy to red meat and other products containing alpha-gal that can be related to tick bites. The test is significant for patients suspected of having allergic reactions to foods, particularly red meats.
Special Instructions
Avoid multiple patient encounters to reduce the risk of sample contamination. For multiple allergen orders, refer to the "Allergen Specimen Collection Instructions."
Limitations
Allergen results between 0.10-0.34 kU/L are intended for specialist use, as the clinical relevance is undetermined. These concentrations may not correlate with the severity of allergic reactions or skin test results. A negative result does not rule out clinical allergy or anaphylaxis. Correlation with clinical history and in vivo reactivity is essential. Hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic specimens are unacceptable for testing.
