Use
Anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) have been reported in 90-96% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). AMA are also occasionally found in sera of patients with other liver conditions, including chronic active hepatitis, cryptogenic cirrhosis and in patients with clinical but no biochemical evidence of liver disease.
Special Instructions
To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.
Limitations
The presence of anti-mitochondrial antibodies is not exclusively indicative of primary biliary cirrhosis. They may also appear in other liver disorders, and hence should be interpreted in context with clinical and other diagnostic findings.
