Use
The Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) test is used primarily to evaluate ovarian reserve in women which is an indicator of ovarian response. It plays a crucial role in infertility workups and is often employed to assist in the assessment of ovarian function and guide reproductive planning. AMH levels can also provide insight into the presence of ovarian pathologies such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and premature ovarian failure. Additionally, it aids in determining the onset of menopause and evaluating granulosa cell tumors. For males, it helps in assessing testicular function and gonadal status in certain contexts.
Special Instructions
Specimens should be collected in a serum separator tube, and it is also acceptable to use a plain red or green (lithium heparin) tube for collection if needed. It's important to separate the serum from cells as soon as possible, or within two hours of collection, and then transfer 0.5 mL of serum to the ARUP standard transport tube, maintaining a minimum of 0.2 mL. The sample should be kept frozen for stability and transported accordingly to preserve the integrity of the serum analyte.
Limitations
AMH test results can vary significantly due to differing assay methods, and results may not be interchangeable between different laboratories or assay types. Biological variability, such as changes related to age or hormonal treatment, must also be considered when interpreting results. AMH levels can be influenced by factors such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and interpretation should be done in conjunction with clinical findings and other laboratory tests to ensure accuracy. The test may give false low levels in the presence of gonadotoxic drugs or premature ovarian failure where the ovarian reserve is critically low.
