Antiextractable Nuclear Antigens
Also known as: Anti-ENA, Anti-RNP, Anti-Sm
Use
Detect antibodies associated with SLE and mixed connective tissue disease. Anti-Sm is highly specific for SLE. Anti-RNP is found with a variety of rheumatoid diseases with high titers associated mainly with MCTD.
Special Instructions
Specimen collection requires 1 mL of serum in a red-top tube or gel-barrier tube. Specimen must remain stable at room temperature, refrigerated, or frozen for 14 days. Freezing and thawing are stable up to 3 cycles. Avoid hemolysis, icterus, lipemia, and bacterial contamination.
Limitations
The test is semiquantitative for IgG class antibodies. It may not differentiate between different levels of disease activity and is not suitable for monitoring changes in antibody levels over time. Hemolysis, icterus, lipemia, and bacterial contamination can affect the test results.
