Antimicrobial Susceptibility - Fungal (Yeasts and Molds)

Use
This test is used to determine the in vitro susceptibility of fungal organisms, including yeasts and molds, to a range of antifungal agents. Interpretive data include designations like susceptible, intermediate, susceptible dose dependent (SDD), or resistant. The test helps clinicians in selecting appropriate antifungal treatments for infections.
Special Instructions
Isolate identification and specimen source are required for the testing process. Not all antifungal agents are tested at ARUP; some are referred to the Fungus Testing Laboratory at UT Health Science Center at additional charges. An extra fee is billed for organisms not submitted in pure culture. If species identification is not provided or is incorrect, ARUP performs the identification at an additional charge.
Limitations
The susceptibility testing of some molds may not be clinically relevant (e.g., Penicillium species or Cladosporium species). Certain antifungal agents might not attain effective concentrations in all body sites, notably in vitreal, cerebrospinal fluid, and urinary tracts. Some fungi, such as Blastomyces dermatitidis and Histoplasma capsulatum, are not tested at ARUP, and specimens are sent elsewhere for testing. Testing is not applicable to isolates from environmental sources.
