B-Type Natriuretic Peptide
Also known as: BNP
Use
Aids in diagnosis, prognosis, and management of acute and chronic heart failure. A BNP value greater than 100 pg/mL is consistent with a diagnosis of congestive heart failure (CHF) in the appropriate clinical setting. Blood concentrations of natriuretic peptides may also be elevated in patients with myocardial infarction and in patients who are candidates for or are undergoing renal dialysis.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
False-positive results are more common in females greater than 75 years of age. The test may not be suitable for patients with elevated blood levels of natriuretic peptides due to myocardial infarction or renal dialysis candidacy without appropriate clinical context.
