Use

This test is a highly specific serologic test used to aid in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or undifferentiated inflammatory arthritides. It measures antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) in both IgA and IgG forms, which enhances the sensitivity for RA diagnosis. The presence of these autoantibodies is associated with future RA development and may predict radiographic joint destruction. They can also be present in the preclinical phase of the disease, providing critical information for patient management.

Special Instructions

The preferred test for initial screening for rheumatoid arthritis is the Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Panel (3016634). This test is New York state approved. It's important to monitor patients with weak positive results and consider repeating the test as necessary.

Limitations

The test may not identify all cases of rheumatoid arthritis as some patients may not have detectable levels of anti-CCP antibodies. In particular, patients with weak positive results should be monitored over time. False positives may occur, especially in the context of other inflammatory conditions or in the presence of other autoantibodies, leading to misdiagnosis if interpreted in isolation without clinical context.
