Use
The Epstein-Barr Virus by Quantitative NAAT, Plasma test is used to detect and quantify the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in plasma samples. Quantifying EBV can help guide clinical decisions regarding diagnosis and treatment strategies. The assay offers improved comparability across laboratories due to international standardization but may still present some variability due to commutability issues with the standard.
Special Instructions
This test requires careful handling of specimens to ensure accurate results. Plasma must be separated from cells within 24 hours of collection and transferred to a specific ARUP standard transport tube. The minimum volume required for the test is 1 mL, although 2 mL is preferred. The importance of interpreting each viral load measurement in clinical context is stressed, especially considering potential inhibitors or viral loads below detection limits.
Limitations
The test has a quantitative range of 1.54-8.00 log IU/mL (35.0-100,000,000 IU/mL). An interpretation of "Not Detected" does not entirely rule out the presence of EBV due to potential inhibitors or concentrations below the assay's sensitivity level. While standardized to improve consistency across laboratories, the results might vary due to specific commutability issues inherent to the standard used across different laboratories.
