Human Metapneumovirus by PCR

Use
This test is used to detect human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in children and immunocompromised adults. It is particularly useful when there is a suspicion of hMPV infection despite a negative result from a direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test. The test helps in confirming or excluding hMPV as the causative agent of respiratory illness in these populations.
Special Instructions
Specimen source must be provided. Acceptable specimens include nasopharyngeal swabs, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), or pleural fluid. Specimens should be transferred to viral transport media and stored frozen for optimal stability.
Limitations
A negative result does not completely rule out the presence of hMPV infection, as PCR inhibitors in the sample or insufficient nucleic acid concentrations could lead to a falsely negative result. The test is qualitative, and assay performance can vary depending on the source specimen and methodological conditions.
