Use
The test is used to detect the presence of precipitating antibodies associated with hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
Special Instructions
Early diagnosis of HP is crucial to prevent the development of extensive pulmonary fibrosis or restrictive lung disease. Complete avoidance of the inciting antigen after diagnosis can lead to total recovery in most cases. Presence of fibrosis and honeycombing are linked to higher mortality risk.
Limitations
Presence of serum precipitins against suspected antigens indicates past exposure sufficient to elicit a humoral immunologic response, but does not confirm the disease or rule it out if absent. The testing panel may not include the specific causative antigen. This means a positive test does not confirm, and a negative test does not exclude, a diagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
