Lipid Cascade With Reflex to Lipoprotein Particle Assessment by NMR (Without Graph)
Use
The lipid cascade supports risk assessment and management of patients who present with cardiometabolic risk (CMR) factors (e.g., elevated blood pressure, abdominal obesity, insulin resistance (IR), lipoprotein abnormalities and elevated blood glucose).
Special Instructions
Two specimens must be included with all test requests. The NMR LipoTube is the only acceptable gel-barrier tube for lipoprotein reflex; serum or plasma drawn in other gel-barrier collection tubes should not be used. Centrifuge within two hours of collection. Samples should be shipped with frozen cool packs.
Limitations
If triglyceride level is >800 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol will not be calculated. The NMR lipoprotein analysis is an additional reflex test performed at an extra charge if criteria are met. Specimens cannot be stored at room temperature beyond a total preanalytical time of 24 hours, and specimens more than six days old are rejected.

Collection Instructions
Separate serum from cells within 45 minutes of collection. Centrifuge specimen at 1600 to 1800 xg for 10 to 15 minutes to avoid red cell contamination. The sample should be refrigerated if not centrifuged immediately and centrifuged within 24 hours.
Patient Preparation
Patient should be fasting for eight hours.
Storage Instructions
Stable at room temperature for six hours, or refrigerated for ten days.
