Use
The Neuron-specific Enolase (NSE) test is primarily used for long-term serial monitoring of NSE levels in patients to aid in the management of certain types of malignancies, particularly neuroendocrine tumors. NSE is an enzyme found in neuronal tissue, and elevated serum levels can indicate neuronal damage or the presence of neuroendocrine tumors. This test assists healthcare providers in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment over time and monitoring the progression or regression of the disease.
Special Instructions
The account must submit the patient's Social Security number to enable the serial monitoring service. It is crucial to use only one assay method consistently to accurately monitor each patient's course of therapy, as values obtained using different methodologies are not interchangeable. To order this test without the serial monitor service, use test 140624.
Limitations
This test was developed by LabCorp, and its performance characteristics were determined internally. It has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration, meaning it is not intended to be used as standalone evidence of the presence or absence of malignant disease. Results from this test should not be interpreted as absolute indicators of disease state, and different assay methodologies cannot be used interchangeably for serial testing.
