Paraneoplastic Reflexive Panel

Use
The Paraneoplastic Reflexive Panel is designed to aid in the diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes. It evaluates for the presence of high-risk paraneoplastic antibodies independent of neurologic phenotype. This aids in the differentiation of paraneoplastic neurologic disorders from other inflammatory nervous system disorders, which is essential for patient management and treatment planning. The test results should be interpreted in correlation with the patient's clinical history and other laboratory findings.
Special Instructions
Testing is recommended in both serum and CSF to maximize diagnostic yield. Additional charges may apply for reflex tests based on the initial screening results. Ensure that specimens are not contaminated, heat-inactivated, hemolyzed, or lipemic. Specimens need to be separated from cells and prepared promptly to ensure accuracy of the test results.
Limitations
A negative test result does not exclude the diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurological syndrome or autoimmune neurological disease. Some paraneoplastic antibodies, such as anti-Hu, Ri, Yo, and Tr(DNER), might not be detected in all patients with paraneoplastic neurological disorder. Additionally, false positives may occur, and results must be interpreted within the broader clinical context. The presence of antibodies is also associated with various cancers; hence, a comprehensive evaluation for underlying neoplasms is recommended upon detecting these antibodies.
