Use
Detect rotavirus in stools of patients suspected of having viral gastroenteritis
Special Instructions
Specimens should be collected as soon as possible after the onset of disease, preferably between three to five days after onset. For diapered children, collection can be facilitated using a disposable diaper turned inside out or a "Saran wrap" diaper.
Limitations
The quality of the specimen cannot be evaluated, and the collection is typically random. Specimens received in a grossly leaking container, in fixative or additive, bacterial swabs, diapers, or those unlabeled or with a name discrepancy will be rejected. Specimens must be refrigerated immediately and are typically not accepted after 72 hours of collection if not properly stored.
